  1. CYA - Further Reading - Trouble Free Pool

Nov 22, 2024 · CYA is a friend when used with the correct ratio to free chlorine. Benefits to Using CYA in Pool Water. Benefit one is the UV protection. Benefit two is the flattened pH dependency. With CYA 30, the HOCl concentration drops by 15% between pH 7.5 and 8.0. Benefit three is the chlorine reservoir. All that "useless" chlorine bound to CYA stays in ...

  2. How did the CYA levels get so high in my pool - Trouble Free Pool

Jun 28, 2012 · CYA increases over time in a pool if you are using stabilized chlorine products, Trichlor pucks/tabs (or powdered "shock") or Dichlor granular (sometimes also sold as "shock"). For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm. For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.

  3. The Free Chlorine and Cyanuric Acid Relationship

Feb 26, 2025 · One cornerstone of TFPC is understanding the relationship between stabilizer and free chlorine. Stabilizer or cyanuric acid (CYA) protects your free chlorine (FC) from the sun. With no CYA stabilizer in your pool, FC will be quickly consumed by sun exposure instead of doing its job to oxidize organic material like bacteria and algae.

  4. 3" chlorine tabs without CYA - Trouble Free Pool

Jul 23, 2016 · The problem with this slow dissolving form of chlorine is that it will cause CYA levels to rise since once the chlorine is used up the CYA remains. The next slowest dissolving form of chlorine is calcium hypochlorite (cal hypo) which does not contain CYA but will cause calcium levels to rise over time.

  5. Chlorine/CYA chart vs 7.5% of CYA | Trouble Free Pool

May 30, 2019 · I believe I've seen it said here that FC should be 7.5% of CYA. In other words, if your CYA is 50 then FC should be 3.75 (let's say 4). I've also been referred to the Chlorine/CYA Chart which says that for a CYA of 50, FC should be 6 to 8, with a minimum of 4. So is the 7.5% calculation that...

  6. What's the reasoning behind a higher CYA level recommendation …

Aug 17, 2022 · CYA of 30ppm with a FC of 12 is MUCH less harsh on eyes/skin/equipment/bathing suits than a FC of 3 with a CYA of 0. It's all about the hypochlorous acid that is free in the water (HOCl). CYA binds it up, and the same amount of HOCl is present in water with the same FC/CYA ratio, whatever the actual numbers may be.

  7. PoolMath - Trouble Free Pool

Calcite Saturation Index - requires pH, TA, CH, CYA, Temp, uses Borate, Salt Less than -0.6 is suggestive of problems for plaster, tile, stone, and pebble pools. Greater than 0.6 is suggestive of problems for all pools. Suggested FC Levels

  8. Do I add CYA before or during SLAM process? - Trouble Free Pool

Jul 22, 2013 · Could you get confirmation on the zero CYA before you start the SLAM process? To answer your question, (assuming zero CYA) if you are adding granular CYA, add about 30ppm via sock method hanging in front of a return. Until the CYA is gone from the sock, use FC 10 as your shock level. Once gone from sock, use 12 as shock level.

  9. Adding CYA to the skimmer, or not - Trouble Free Pool

May 3, 2009 · 8 ounces of CYA in 100 gallons has the pH drop to 6.26 and the active chlorine gets much smaller. For comparison, Muriatic Acid has a pH of around -1 so even with 100:1 dilution, the pH is still a very low 1.0. As long as the pump is running, both Trichlor and CYA dissolve relatively slowly so would not be a problem during that time.

  10. Pentair IntelliChem CYA levels controversy (less than 30ppm or …

Jul 26, 2011 · Adding ORP control brings in a host of other issues, changing the CYA recommendations. ORP control is exceedingly trouble prone, though it gets a little bit more manageable as CYA gets lower. You then get into this tradeoff where lower CYA levels can work around some of the problems with ORP, but lower CYA levels create problems for the SWG.
